Biography

Charles Astor Bristed, a scholar and author who often wrote under the pseudonym Carl Benson, was born in New York City to Rev. John Bristed and Magdalen Astor. After his mother's death in 1832, he went to live with John Jacob Astor, his maternal grandfather. He graduated from Yale College in 1839, and Trinity College in Cambridge, England, in 1845. He married Laura Whetten Brevoort (1823–1861), sister of James Carson Brevoort in 1847. In 1867, he married Grace Sedgwick.
