Biography

Dr. Dean de la Motte joined the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at Salve Regina University as a Professor in 2006. He came to Salve from Belmont Abbey College, where he was an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature, 2000-2006. Prior to that, he taught French for many years at Guilford College.

He received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1990, an M.A. in Comparative Literature, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1985, and a B.A. in Comparative Literature, University of California at Santa Barbara, in 1983.

He served as Provost and Dean of the Faculty/Vice President for Academic Affairs at Salve Regina University, 2006-2012, Academic Dean/Vice President for Academic Affairs at Belmont Abbey College, from 2000-2006, and as chair of the Department of Modern Languages at Guilford College, from 1996-1999.

Dr. de la Motte teaches French literature and language as well as humanities courses. His research and publications are almost exclusively in the area of 19th-century France, specifically how technological, social and political changes (industrialization, revolution, democratization and the rise of mass culture, for example) are related to the evolution of the novel as a genre.
