Biography
Sister Mary Mercy McAuliffe, RSM entered the Sisters of Mercy in Cumberland, Rhode Island on September 8, 1944.
She was born Jean E. McAuliffe on December 13, 1925, daughter of Thomas and Grace (Brophy) McAuliffe. She received her Bachelor's of Education from Catholic Teachers College and her MSLS from Marywood.
She worked in education in the Diocese of Fall River. She served as an elementary school teacher, a librarian at Mount St. Mary High School, and principal of Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, MA. At Salve Regina served as Director of Research and Planning in the 1970s. She also was an adjunct professor in special needs education. In 1981, she left her Salve Regina position to spend ten years as director of Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton, MA, which named her "Administrator of the Year."
Other organizations where Sister McAuliffe had administrative roles include the Massachusetts Department of Education and the Salve Regina Board of Trustees (ca. 1976-1978).
Sister McAuliffe later returned to Salve Regina served as Assistant Dean/Library Services in the 1990s. In 1988, Salve Regina College awarded her an honorate doctorate of education.
She retired from Salve Regina University in 2009. She died on March 14, 2020. Her motto was "To Jesus Through Mary."
