Biography
James Carson Brevoort (1818-1887), some of Henry Brevoort, Jr., and Laura Carson Brevoort, was born in New York City and studied in Switzerland and Paris, graduating from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures as a civil engineer in 1837. He was appointed as private secretary to Washington Irving, minister to Spain, and returned to Brooklyn, NY, in 1844. He married Elizabeth Dorothea Lefferts in 1845, and managed the land holdings of her father, Judge Leffert Lefferts. Brevoort pursued scholarly interests in history, entomology, and ichthyology, and was a trustee and superintendent of the Astor Library. He was dedicated to public service, devoting time as a board member of Brooklyn Board of Education, and the Board of Water Commissioners. He was also instrumental in founding, and served as president and director, of the Long Island Historical Society.
