Scope and Contents

This collection includes biographical information about and writings by Sister Eugena Poulin. The biographical information includes collected articles as well as memorial information and a program from a French wine seminar held at Salve Regina University. Included with the writings are copies of three articles written by Sister Poulin as well as two drafts of her family history.

Biographical Note

Sister Eugena Poulin, RSM (1932-2008) was a professor of French at Salve Regina University. Born Simone Theresa Poulin in Central Falls, Rhode Island, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1951 and professed her vows in 1954. She earned her Bachelor's degree from the former Catholic Teahcers College, her Master's degree from Assumption College, and her Ph. D. from the University of Florida. After teaching in the elementary schools in the Diocese of Providence, she was assigned to Salve Regina College in 1981 and taught there until 2007. Her research interests included her family's genealogy, the lives of women in seventeenth-century New France, and Newport's French newspaper during the colonial period, "La Gazette Francoise." Her awards included Rhode Island's Franco-American of the Year and the American French Geneaological Society's Franco-American Hall of Fame.

Abstract

This collection contains drafts of several writing publications written by Sister Eugena Poulin on her family history and the history of women in New France, as well as collected biographical information, materials from attended events, and press.

Hanging in the Archives is the Palmes Académiques awarded to Sister Poulin by the Republic of France posthumously in 2008.
