Historical Note
The Newport Ship Yard was founded in 1834 by Silas H. Cottrell in Newport, Rhode Island. The first United States lightship was built there in 1853. It operated three piers on Newport Harbor, one at 379 Thames St. The shipyard went through bankruptcy four times. By the mid-1900s the shipyard conducted work on commercial, recreational, and government boats, and offered marine railways, wharfage, welding and fabrication, machinist mechanics, carpentry, painting, electrical work, and rigging.
The shipyard was sold in 1998, and a different business operates under the same name.
