Scope and Contents note

The Anthony Walsh papers deal primarily with Dr. Walsh's interactions with Salve Regina University and his published papers on the history of psychology. There are several newspaper articles about Dr. Walsh written throughout his career, as well as a large collection of documents and correspondence relating directly to his relationship with Salve Regina University and the Department of Psychology, such as his Curriculum Vitae, papers and correspondence relating to promotion and tenure, and correspondence from his time as chair of the Department of Psychology. Dr. Walsh has archived copies of his published papers along with publishing correspondence and rough drafts of several of these papers. A collection of correspondence and materials related to Cheiron 14, which Dr. Walsh hosted at Salve Regina in 1982, is also included.

There is also a wealth of information on the first Salve Regina University Web site, designed by Dr. Walsh in 1996, including several print outs of the Web page. Also included are standards manuals for the web site design created by Dr. Walsh and correspondence and articles about the web site. Along with this information about the Salve Regina University Web site are correspondences and print outs of the Department of Psychology home page, also designed by Dr. Walsh and featured in the 1996 Internet World's Fair.

Biographical note

Anthony Walsh, Ph.D., was born November 26, 1940 in Worcester, Mass. He attended Worcester Junior College and earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts in 1961. He then attended American International College in Springfield, Mass., and earned a Bachelor of Arts in General Psychology in 1964. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Clinical and Counseling Psychology and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Clinical and Counseling Psychology, both at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., in 1967. In 1974, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of New Hampshire specializing in the History of Psychology and in Systematic Psychology.

He began his teaching career in 1966 as an Instructor of Psychology at Mitchell College in New London, Conn., and went on to teach at the University of New Hampshire, Durham and Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn., before joining the Salve Regina University faculty in 1976. He has served as chair of the Department of Psychology from 1977 to the present (2009) and was promoted from Associate Professor of Psychology to Professor of Psychology in 1981. He spent four years as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Brown University, from 1982-1986, while remaining a member of the Salve Regina faculty.

Dr. Walsh has done extensive research into the historical topic of phrenology which was a precursor to modern psychology and psychiatry. His interest in the history of medicine, particularly psychiatry, and psychology is apparent in his research and correspondence and a great many of his papers deal with these topics.

Additionally, Dr. Walsh developed a keen interest in computers, serving as a team member of the IBM and Salve Regina College conjoint "Technological Self-Study Team" in 1984-1985, a group concerned with the implementation of integrated technology at Salve Regina. Subsequently he served as Adjunct Professor of Information Systems Science at Salve Regina from 1986-1988. In 1996, Dr. Walsh created the first incarnation of the Salve Regina University Web site, a personal web site used in his teaching, and a Department of Psychology Web page, bringing Salve Regina and his department to the World Wide Web. He maintained the Salve web site until 1999 when a full-time web master was hired by the university. He still maintains his personal web site as well as the web site for his Department.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note

The bulk of the collection was donated by Professor Walsh in June of 2009 under accession number 2009.020; however, one folder was donated in 2008 under accession number 2008.048.

Related Archival Materials note

At Salve Regina, the Department of Psychology holds some of Dr. Walsh's papers and Dr. Walsh can be seen reading the names of the graduates at the May 15, 1994 Commencement Ceremony.

In addition, the archives of the History of American Psychology holds contributions from Dr. Walsh.
