Scope and Contents

The collection is mainly comprised of correspondence, including personal and professional letters, baby announcements, and letters of recommendation. Most of the correspondence is addressed to S. M. Venard, but some is addressed to a group of Sisters of Mercy or another sister in administration and perhaps passed along to S. M. Venard. The Event Programs folder includes several programs and invitations, as well as a business card for Air Force Lt. Donald F. Benoit, whose college Commencement program is also included.

Biographical / Historical

Sister Mary Venard Benoit, R. S. M., earned a B.S.S. from Bryant University in 1940 and an Ed. M. She taught at St. Edward's Junior High School in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Called Sister Mary Venard, she began teaching at Salve Regina College in 1953 as an instructor in Secretarial Science and the Assistant Treasurer. She was listed as faculty in Business as of 1955, and she continued to teach until ca. 1964. She remained Assistant Treasurer until ca. 1966.

Abstract

Includes correspondence and personal papers of Sister Mary Venard, RSM. Much of the correspondence is from Sister Hwa, a Salve Regina alumna who founded a convent in Taiwan.

Materials in the collection are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Materials were transferred to the Archives at an unknown date. A note on the first folder of the collection, possibly written by Sister Mary Smith, reads, "Source: unknown when arrived in Archives."

Related Materials

Related to offices in which she served PG.18.3: Asian Sisters Programs for photographs and scrapbook pages depicting the life and work of Sister Shao-ling Hwa. Some of these photographs may have once been included in the correspondence.

Processing Information

These materials were found semi-processed in the Archives, possibly by Sister Mary Smith, prior to 2014. The collection was processed by Archivist and Special Collections Librarian Genna Duplisea in 2017.
